Lightsaber for a Jedi Brother

So my brother turned 40, and his son told me I should make a lightsaber cake for him. I threw this together one afternoon.

Jersey with Basketball and Softball

My neice's birthday was the special occasion, and I wanted to make her a cake that fit her personality. She is an athlete who loves softball and basketball, so it seemed only appropriate to use those as a theme.

The basketball was the most challenging. The fondant was stretched over an actual basketball (after it was thoroughly washed!) to imprint the texture with all the dimples. Both ball cakes were baked in different size pyrex mixing bowls.

A lot of color mixing was required to get the various fondant colors just right. I started with mixing a very large batch of white, then worked in the coloring as-needed for the different pieces. A LOT of kneading resulting in sore hands...

She loved the cakes and they tasted great.
Happy Birthday Autumn-Bottom!!!

Gabriel turns two...Mod Monkey Style!

Meet the "Mod Monkey"!!!
This was my second attempt at a fondant cake. My little guy was turning two and I knew it had to be a great cake! He LOVED it. I just chose the plates and things and then used them to match my colors and design! I freehanded the monkey face...not much of an artist but I gotta say...I did a pretty good job on this one! I was almost a little impressed with myself!

This cake would not have been complete without a banana to go with the monkey. It took some convincing that it wasn't real! I made it out of pure fondant and I painted it with gel food coloring. Not bad, right?

It was an awesome day, terrific party, and a pretty fantastic cake!

Next, a cake for my wonderful, precious, softball playin', basketball lovin' Niece! It's gonna have to be great! Can't wait to see what I come up with! Hmmmm...where to begin.....
